Faith That Lives and Loves
by Pastor Brandon, Grace Bible Church
There’s something uniquely encouraging about being among the people of God—sharing life, prayer, and fellowship with those who genuinely love both the Lord and one another. That kind of love doesn’t appear out of nowhere; it’s rooted deeply in faith. Our ability to love well—to love sincerely and selflessly—flows from our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Paul captures this beautifully in Philemon 1:4–6 (LSB):
“I thank my God, always making mention of you in my prayers, because I hear of your love and of the faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and toward all the saints; and I pray that the fellowship of your faith may become effective through the full knowledge of every good thing which is in you for the sake of Christ.”
When Paul describes Philemon’s faith and love, he weaves them together in a way that’s both intentional and instructive. The structure of the verse places faith at the center—like the “meat” of a sandwich—with love surrounding it. In other words, true faith produces real love. The way we care for others is an outflow of what we believe about Christ.
The Bible often reminds us that the church isn’t a place for perfect people—it’s a place for people being made whole by grace. That truth calls us to authenticity. Our faith isn’t just a private conviction; it’s something that’s meant to be lived out in community. When faith is genuine, it naturally shapes our relationships, our attitudes, and our actions.
In a world that tends to define faith as a private opinion or a vague sense of optimism, Scripture paints a much richer picture. Faith is active. It’s visible. It transforms the way we live. As Paul wrote in Romans 1:17 (LSB), “The righteous will live by faith.”
Faith is not about closing your eyes and hoping for the best. As Hebrews 11:1 (LSB) explains, “Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” True faith is anchored in the revealed truth of God’s Word. It’s not a leap into the dark—it’s a confident step into the light of what God has promised.
Augustine once said, “Faith is to believe what we do not see. The reward of this faith is to see what we believe.” That perspective captures so well what it means to live by faith: trusting what God has said, even before we see it unfold.
At Grace Bible Church, our goal is to help strengthen that kind of faith through the consistent exposition of Scripture. As Charles Spurgeon wisely put it, “Now, I hold no man’s faith to be sure faith unless he knows what he believes.” Faith grows deeper as our understanding of God’s truth grows clearer.
My hope for you is that your faith in the Lord Jesus will not only be strengthened but will also overflow in love—for God and for those around you. Because when faith takes root, love is the natural fruit.
May your life reflect a faith that lives, a love that serves, and a confidence that rests in Christ alone.
